About the Musical
Lolly is a short musical (c. 12 minutes) which tells the story of an adult connecting with their inner child after a long period of absence. Lolly is an acronym for Little One, Life Loves You. The musical is scored for a 4-person ensemble, including mezzo-soprano, cello, clarinet, and piano. The words and music were written by Salwan Carwright-Shamoon. The original recording cast features 4 friends and graduates from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire: Samantha Lewis (mezzo-soprano), Salwan Cartwright-Shamoon (piano), Griff Wadkin (cello), and Will Hammond (clarinet).
Speaking about the project, Salwan writes:
This project was significant for me as it was the culmination of my postgraduate studies at music college. The dedicatee of this work is Paul Wingfield, the Head of Vocal and Operatic Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and an inspiring teacher who deeply influenced my music journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my teachers for the supportive role they’ve played in my development.
This project was generously funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Department for Communities (NI).
